Houston calls itself the Energy Capital of the World, and the numbers back it up. The metro area is home to more than 5,000 energy-related companies, spanning everything from oil majors to renewable developers to pipeline operators.
A Fortune 500 Powerhouse
The 2026 Fortune 500 list includes 27 companies headquartered in the Houston area — tying the city with Chicago for the second-most Fortune 500 headquarters in the country, behind only New York City. Fourteen of those are energy companies. The count is set to grow: Expand Energy announced in 2026 that it is relocating its headquarters from Oklahoma to Spring, Texas, just outside Houston.
The Refining and Pipeline Backbone
Houston-area companies operate a large share of the nation’s natural gas pipeline network and account for about 15.3% of total U.S. oil refining capacity on their own. Texas as a whole refines more than 5.1 million barrels of oil per day — roughly 29% of total U.S. refining capacity, more than any other state.
Why It Matters for Energy Markets
That concentration of refining, pipeline, and corporate infrastructure makes Houston a physical and financial hub for U.S. energy markets — decisions made in Houston boardrooms and trading desks ripple through natural gas, power, and fuel markets nationwide.
